(Essen / Willebroek, July 25, 2006) Schenker is expanding its logistics center for fast moving consumer goods in Willebroek, Belgium. In a few weeks, Schenker will be able to offer a logistics facility measuring 65,000 square meters, with 56 loading and unloading gates. The total capacity of the center will be up to 85,000 pallet places, spread over four sections. With 51,000 square meters built for 240,000 tons of outgoing goods and 23 million picked cases per year, the facility went operational in 2005.
“This gives us even more flexibility, so that we can deal more easily with peak demand from existing and new customers”, says Frans Broeckx, Director Physical Distribution, Schenker N.V. The new fourth section will also offer installing cooling units on the roof, so that the goods can be stored and handled at the right temperature. An area of 16,000 square meters is already reserved for temperature-controlled goods, with 13,000 square meters being kept at a temperature of 18° C and 3,000 square meters at a constant 15° C. The new section will also have a cool room of 700 square meters with a refrigerator temperature of between 3 and 10° C.
