DB Schenker uses a combination of many different measures to help reduce the environmental impact of road freight transport: From transport organization and vehicle technology to the point of employee trainings.

The cornerstones of an environmentally friendly transport organization include the bundling of transport and the optimum utilization of transport networks. DB Schenker’s closely knit distribution sys-tem provides a basis for this in road transport. Direct connections between the sender and
the recipient are the most sensible option for fully loaded trucks. On the other hand, many jobs pass through a hub sys-tem. the trucks head towards various transport hubs every night, where the shipments are consolidated for particular transport connections. This way, DB Schenker achieves maximum utilization of the available loading space while meeting its schedules and delivery times.

Here are some of the measures currently being taken:

Economical driving
Economical driving can have a great effect on the energy balance, DB Schenker trains truck drivers how to efficiently in regard to their energy consumption., All 30,000 drivers, including those of the subcontractors working for DB Schenker, will be trained in energy efficient driving. Experience has shown that proper training for truck drivers can reduce fuel consumption by up to 10 percent.

The low-emission vehicle fleet
For economic and environmental reasons, DB Schenker continually renews its own fleet of vehicles, and ensures the quality of the subcontractorsDB Schenker Sweden, for example, began operating the first truck powered by frozen biogas at the end of March 2013. Frozen biogas contains methane and can be used as an alternative fuel. City logistics concepts with low-emission trucks are being implemented in 40 European cities in 2013 and will gradually be expanded.

State-of-the-art technology
DB Schenker also continually test new technologies and fuels, such as hybrid engines and second-generation biodiesel, so that can use the newest and most environmentally friendly technology in the market. Additionally, each national DB Schenker subsidiary analyzes the extent to which loading capacities can be increased for more energy-efficient transport – for example, using high-capacity equipment such as swap bodies and trailers.
