Creating Operational efficiencies for Furniture and Fabric Manufacturers.
Bringing products to market and into the hands of savvy customers is challenging for manufacturers at all levels. In particular, many are faced with tremendous hurdles in the areas of supply chain distribution, logistics and cost, as well as increasingly fierce competition.
To address these issues, a number of furniture manufacturers are turning to DB Schenker in Canada including mattress manufacturer, Simmons, as well decorative fabric and home furnishings market leader, Robert Allen. Both of these companies ship fabric to Canada from fabric mills located in North/South Carolina, and are reliant on DB Schenker for an innovative program designed specifically to strip out operational costs and generate revenue for furniture manufacturers. The furniture/fabric program, which is used by both of these companies as well as other members of the Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Association (OFMA) and Quebec Furniture Manufacturers Association (QFMA), is based on the premise that consolidating small orders from multiple manufacturers can deliver big savings.
How it works:
Furniture manufacturers bring in shipments of raw materials (fabric) into the Canadian market each day. Given that each order typically requires less than a full truckload of space (LTL), the cost of bringing orders in on a daily basis is prohibitive. With DB Schenker's innovative program, however, small orders for these and other manufacturers are consolidated, ensuring each manufacturer can take advantage of the efficiencies achieved with full truckload deliveries. Orders are then brought into a centralized location and de-consolidated accordingly.
Whereas LTL shipments usually take longer to get into Canada, DB Schenker ensures that all participants in its program benefit from competitive pricing and fast and efficient service that just cannot be attained when single delivery orders are placed. The furniture manufacturers all appreciate Schenker's expertise, and the fact that DB Schenker has established strong ties with the fabric mills. Transit times are expedited, custom and freight rates are competitive (one customs clearance charge and one transportation charge), and tracking visibility along with customized reports for each client means the furniture manufacturers always have insight into delivery status.
Going one step further, DB Schenker is also providing increasingly more support for furniture manufacturers that are making raw material purchases from Asia. Like the North American program, the company consolidates Asian shipments, and brings them into the country via ocean transport or the occasional air shipment.
